THE LITHUANIAN BEER TOUR – 11 DAYS/ 10 NIGHTS

Lithuania has one of the most interesting beer cultures on earth, but it’s a beer culture that is almost wholly unknown outside the country itself. Beer has left a huge mark on popular Lithuanian folklore, beer refreshes us in the hot summer days and warms us up in the cold winter evenings. A pint of beer raises stormy debate, inspires open conversations, and playful games. Explore together with a local guide craft beer breweries and bars in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda  where you’ll be able to get acquainted with production of Lithuanian brewers, taste of a local craft beer brands with typical snacks and learn about origins, culture, traditional way of making and consuming of Lithuanian beer.

September 17 (Tuesday) Depart New York – Helsinki
The group will depart John F. Kennedy airport on Finnair flight number at 3:55 p.m. and will arrive Helsinki at 7:00 a.m. the next day.

September 18 (Wednesday) Arrive Vilnius
Depart Helsinki on Finnair flight number 1107 at 12:30 p.m. Arrive in Vilnius at 1:45 p.m. and transfer to Hotel Amberton. Welcome dinner at Alinė Leičiai.

September 19 (Thursday) Vilnius – Utenos Alus Brewery – Vilnius
At 11:00 a.m., you will begin your day with a tour of the Utenos Beer Museum. Utenos Alus Brewery is a Baltic region brewery. Every year, Utenos Alus brews more than 100 million litres of beer. Utenos Alus brews beer not only for Lithuanian consumers, but it also produces international brands for the Scandinavian and northern European markets. Return to hotel late afternoon. Feel free to walk Old Town to check out some real cool pubs. Lunch and dinner on your own.

September 20 (Friday) Vilnius
Morning visit to the UNESCO listed Vilnius Old Town with many historic and architectural monuments. We will pass by Vilnius Cathedral, Grand Duke Palace and go up the Church of St. John Bell Tower, walk Pilies gatvė (“Castle street”)-the oldest and most flamboyant street in Old Town, see Vilnius University, Gediminas Castle, The Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fights (“KGB Museum”) and be surprised by the artists’ neighborhood-Republic of Užupis. Lunch in a cozy restaurant. The rest of the afternoon you will be free to walk around or rest up for the locally-guided Pub Crawl in the early evening.  You will visit several interesting bars and taste some unique beers. Dinner.

September 21 (Saturday) Vilnius-Kernave-AB Volfas Engelmen Brewery-Kaunas
After breakfast, start your journey to Kaunas. En route you will visit Kernavė, a village said to have been the first capital of Lithuania. Archeological excavations uncovered the remnants of a wooden castle and a large wooden encampment dating back to the 12th century. Because of its uniqueness, Kernavė was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. You will also visit the Kernavė Archaeology and History Museum. Lunch in Kaunas. Continue to AB Volfas Engelman Brewery. One of the three Lithuanian beer giants-Volfas Engelman brewery was founded in 1853. To this day, Volfas Engelman is the only brewery in Lithuania to feature the surnames of its founders. Check in at Hotel Daugirdas. Dinner at Avilys bar and restaurant.

September 22 (Sunday) Kaunas – Kauno Alus Brewery – Kaunas
In the morning you will have some free time. In the early afternoon, you will visit Kauno Alus Brewery. This brewery was founded in 1846 by two Swiss citizens, H. and B. Blumenthals. It is one of the oldest breweries in the country. Lunch. Later proceed to Museum of “Stumbras” where you will taste local spirits. In the evening get ready for another locally-guided Pub Crawl. Dinner.

September 23 (Monday) Kaunas-Klaipeda
Depart for Klaipėda at 11:00 a.m. Check in to Hotel National. Lunch. Once settled in, we will visit the Švyturys Brewery. This brewery was founded by merchant J. W. Reincke in 1784. The brewery was named Švyturys when it was rebuilt after the was in 1946. The recipe for traditional Baltijos beer that is still used to this day was developed in the 1960s. The brewery became one of the country’s most modern beer-making facilities by the time Lithuania’s independence was restored. This evening you will get a chance to experience some of the local pubs in Klaipėda during the locally-guided Pub Crawl. Dinner.

September 24 (Tuesday) Klaipeda-Pakruojis Manor
After checking out of the hotel, you will take a trip to Pakruojis Manor. On the way, visit the Cold War Museum and have lunch in a local homestead. Pakruojis Manor is a former residential manor on the right bank of the Kruoja river. It has been reconstructed into a hotel and restaurant. At the manor inn Traktierius you will taste regional beer and dishes made using beer, and get familiar with the brewing processes, traditions, and interesting facts about beer. In other words, beer is inseparable from the delicious food, cheerful company, and good mood

September 25 (Wednesday) Pakruojis Manor-Barzai-Butautai Manor Brewery
At 10:00 a.m., we will go to Biržai, one of the oldest Lithuanian towns located in the north of the country. A short tour visiting the longest pedestrian bridge in Lithuania and Biržai Castle. Continue to Butautai Manor and meet the third-generation brewers and hear more about their beer making process. Butautai beer was selected as Lithuanian “Product of the Year” for 2010. Lunch. Later, engage in an educational program Žaldokas Beer, where you will learn about ancient brewing tools and experience Lithuanian hospitality. Taste real homemade beer, eat fresh bread and cheese, and enjoy a folk ensemble playing traditional music! Dinner. Overnight in Panevėžys.

September 26 (Thursday) Birzu Alus Brewery-Rinkuskiai Brewery
At 11:00 a.m. take a visit to Biržų Alus-one of the oldest breweries in Lithuania, established in 1686. Visit a beer cellar dating back to 1882 and taste the elixir Lithuanian ancestors used to glorify. Continue to Rinkuškiai beer manor. Lunch. Experience a blend of grandparents’ cherished traditions, parents’ forebearance, and the younger generations’ innovations, which guarantee high-quality and great taste. Return to Vilnius. Dinner. Overnight at the Hotel Amberton. NO PUB CRAWL TONIGHT!!!!

September 27 (Friday) Depart Vilnius
Check out and transfer for Finnair flight 1102, departing at 9:35 a.m. Depart Helsinki 12:20 p.m. – arrive NY JFK at 2:05 p.m.
